Greeting- 2 minutes
Teacher to Students- Listen & Repeat (some or all)
Hello, Hi, Hey, Howdy, G’day, Good Morning, Hola, Aloha, Bon Jour, Bon Dia, Bon Journo, Ni Hao, Konnichiwa, Anyohaseyo, Sambaino, Kiola, Selamat Pagi (am) (pm-Siang), Shalom, Jambo, Asalamalekum, Zzdrastvet-yah, Namaste.

Janken 4’s- Warm-Up/Review/Conversation Skills Practice- 5 minutes
Materials- text
ALT/HRT: Janken and do the conversation first together, then with a few students to practice/demonstrate.
Students: Each student Janken and Converse with 3 others in groups of 4. Choose one place from pages 30-31.
Blackboard

  • W)Koban!
  • L)Police Station!

Review- Listen, Repeat and Point- 5 minutes
Blackboard- Poster of pages 30-31
Text- pages 30-31
ALT- In order (l-r,top-bottom), point to places and say for students to Repeat and Point. Next say in mixed order for students to Repeat and Point
Students- In seat pairs, Listen, Repeat and Point. Check with seat partner.

Chant/Demonstration-Where is the barber?- 10 minutes
Blackboard- Draw 12 block grid with train station at the bottom (similar to page 30-31). Also-
  • Where clap-clap 2X Where is the barber? clap-clap-clap 
  • Go straight clap-clap
  • Turn right clap-clap
  • Turn left clap-clap 
  • STOP!
ALT- Use hand motions before clapping- move hand forward for straight; move right hand right for right; move left hand left for left; hold up both hands palm out for STOP! Move marker on blackboard as chanting.
Students- Sing and clap together.

Activity 2- Making the Same Towns- 15 minutes
Text- page 32-33.
Blackboard- Draw second 12 block grid on blackboard, and You Are Here point on each map in front of train station. Also-

W) Where is the barber?
L) Go straight
L) Turn right
L) Turn left
L) STOP!
W) Here?
L) Yes! (No!)

ALT/HRT- Demonstrate activity- On one grid, write 3-4 place names ramdomly on the 12 blocks. HRT asks ALT “Where’s OO?”. As ALT answers, move finger on the 2nd 12-block grid, ask 'Here?' to confirm, then write place name in that block. Do 3-4 times.
Students- While teachers are drawing on the blackboard, cut place cards from text, page 73. Watch demonstration, then do activity like the demonstration, in pairs.  Listening student place cards onto map in text, page 32-33. Next, change roles and do the activity a second time.

Full Class Checking- 5 minutes (if time)
Blackboard- 12 block grid, with Train Station at bottom.
ALT- Ask for volunteers, or choose a student with dice.  Ask: “Where’s OO?”, move a marker on blackboard to student’s directions, then write the place name there.
Students- Chosen student give directions to ALT.

Wrap-Up- 3 minutes
(Present common mistakes to the whole class. Write the mistaken point on the blackboard, and ask if anybody can see the mistake.) Or-
HRT to Students, in Japanese:
-What did we talk about today? 
-Were there some words you already knew?
-Did you learn any new words?

I've done a lot of Telling The Way lessons- they can be one of the most difficult lessons for students. Using the Where Is The Barber chant and a map drawn on the blackboard, I was amazed how well the students did with this material.  This was the first time for them to study this pattern- check out the video!

CD- track 24-25. Boy- CAN play soccer, play the piano, make rice balls and miso soup; CAN’T play table tennis, play the guitar.  Girl- CAN play table tennis, play the guitar, make rice balls and miso soup; CAN’T play soccer, play the piano.
Blackboard-
  • Can you play soccer? 
  • Yes, I can. I can play soccer.
  • No, I can’t. I can’t play soccer.
Students- Listen to the CD and draw a circle around the things the boy and girl CAN do.
ALT/HRT- Play the CD once, check answers, then play the second track.

Chant- I Can Cook- 5 minutes
Blackboard-
  • I can swim. clap-clap X3 
  • I can swim, too. clap-clap-clap 
  • I can’t swim. clap-clap-clap
ALT- Introduce chant and lead singing. After first round, write students’ ideas for new vocabulary on the blackboard.
Students- Sing together. After the first round, suggest new words/phrases to substitute for swim and fly.
HRT- Suggest ideas for new words/phrases to students in Japanese.

O/X Game- 10 minutes
Blackboard-
  • I can play soccer. 
  • I can play soccer, too. 
  • I can’t play soccer.
Materials: Australia Points Map for each student.
ALT and HRT: Take turns making a statement about students.
ALT, HRT and Students:
  1. Choose a student using 2 dice. 
  2. Repeat after teachers (I can play soccer.); 
  3. Students raise hands to vote if they think the chosen student’s answer is Yes/O, or don’t raise hands if they think the chosen student’s answer is No/X.
  4. Repeat question AGAIN after teacher.
  5. Chosen student asnwers.
  6. Students mark 2 points on Points Map if they guessed correctly. Chosen student also marks 2 points.

Find 3 People- 5-10 minutes
Blackboard-
  • W) I can OO.  
  • L1) I can OO, too! 
  • L2) I can’t OO.
ALT/HRT- Demonstrate and explain activity: With all students standing, students make pairs. Janken winner asks an original sentence- the goal is to make a sentence that will get a positive answer. After getting 3 ‘I can OO, too!’ answers from 3 different students, a student wins and can sit down.
Students- Watch and listen to teachers demonstrate and explain the activity. Then, with all students standing, pair with a partner and play Janken. Winner asks a question, Loser answers. Students getting 3 YES answers from 3 different students win! and sit down.

Wrap-Up- 3 minutes

Students- In seat pairs, see if you know the place names in English.
HRT- Begin after student pairs have a minute or two- Point to a box, ASK students the name in Japanese and WRITE it on the blackboard.
ALT- After the HRT, ask students: “What’s eki in English?”  Write the name in English (park, book shop, school, dept. store, flower shop, police station, bank, restaurant, hospital, fire station, barber, post office, train station).

Chant-Where is the barber?- 6 minutes
Blackboard-
  • Where clap-clap 2X Where is the barber? clap-clap-clap 
  • Go straight clap-clap
  • Turn right clap-clap
  • Turn left clap-clap
  • STOP!
ALT- Listen and Repeat words slowly one time with students, and ask if they know the meanings. Use hand motions before clapping- move hand forward for straight; move right hand right for right; move left hand left for left; hold up both hands palm out for STOP!

Demonstration/Chant- 7 minutes
Materials- Face markers with magnets on back
HRT-Use the chant to ask the ALT, “Where is the OO?”
ALT-Use the chant to answer the HRT’s question, “Where is the OO?” Move the face markers each time, moving only one intersection at a time. After several times, ask the students if they can help you sing and move the marker.
Students- Sing along when you can. Help the teachers sing when/if you can.

Activity- Free-moving Janken Pairs- 10 minutes
Blackboard-
  • W)Station!
  • L) Eki! (駅)
Students- Count out student numbers on grid of place names on blackboard to choose your word. Janken winners get 2 points on points map for each win.
ALT/HRT- Introduce and demonstrate activity together, then with a few students.
